Being able to predict short- and long-term demand for nursing home care is important for the industry and for policy makers. This article reports on a study that used a behavioral model of health service use, combining various sources of county-level data, to predict the rate of nursing homes by county throughout Michigan. Their model was able to explain 90 percent of the variance in nursing home beds across the 75 Michigan counties with nursing homes.
